The bottom-edge failure, and why it is so common
If the bottom edge of a board is soft enough to mark with a thumbnail, that board has failed. It is the most common siding problem on Front Range homes built between the late 1970s and the 1990s, many of which wear composite hardboard, and the pattern is always the same: the cut bottom edge wicks up water, the board swells, and the layers come apart. It starts at the lowest course, under downspouts, behind shrubs, and anywhere siding sits close to the ground. **The good news is that it is rarely a whole-house job** - failures concentrate on one or two elevations and near grade, so replacing the courses that have gone and painting the whole house so the repair disappears costs a fraction of full replacement.
Fix the cause while the boards are off
New boards on an unchanged detail start the same clock. While a section is open it is worth extending downspouts away from the wall, cutting planting back off the siding, getting siding clear of soil and mulch, and checking that the flashing above the repair is actually shedding water outward. None of that is expensive at the time and all of it is expensive later.
Hail, and the damage that shows up next season
Colorado Springs takes damaging hail most years.
